Throughout the Revolutionary War, Virginians had a variety of motivations to enlist in military units to fight for American independence. As the war progressed, the Virginia state government was forced to use other measures besides voluntary enlistments to supply manpower to the Continental Army. Promises were made for money, land and more.
Author John Settle will explore through his presentation about the motivations of Virginia soldiers, how they were recruited, how Chesterfield played an important role in recruiting, and how these men were treated as veterans.
